I realised about half way through my final year that I really didnt want to be an architect. A lot of my inspiration for my final design came from other creative fields and that was when I realised I was more interested in those. When I graduated I spent a lot of time trying to work to on just creating, which led to truth.be.told and my graphics job now. It has been hard but I would rather be illustrating and being creative than drawing buildings.
Did you ever consider dropping out?
About a thousand times. I nearly left at the end of my third year to study teaching but I always stayed because there was only a little while to go and I did enjoy doing the work and being with my friends. It was only when I thought about life after uni that I ever wanted to really leave.
And finally, what is your advice to young students/graduates who are anxious about their future in the arts?
I think you just have to be confident that what you are creating is worth creating because it is your expression and is valid for that reason alone. There are so many creative people in the arts that it can be daunting but you just have to create a niche and keep working.
